September 29th on the Church Calendar is the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel; it celebrates the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Michael on Mt. Gargano, after St. Michael had appeared several times to the Bishop of Sipontum in the late 5th century. Over time, the Feast spread throughout much of Western and Northern Europe, and became known as Michaelmas, with it commemorating All the Holy Angels as well. In the late 10th century, St. Dunstan of Canterbury was vouchsafed a vision by God of the Heavenly Worship, where he witnessed the Bodiless Powers singing, and then later transcribed the words and melody in a set of Kyrie verses of St. Michael’s Feast Day.
St. Michael, Archangel of God, intercede for the Lord for us, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ!
